Wilmer Kopernikus' fundamental question is how to take realism to another level. He confronts difficult themes, from pornography to the use of the coca plant in Latinamerica and absorbs a vast range of art-historical sources in figurative painting, from the old masters' techniques to Expressionism and Cubism. Kopernikus develops his work in reaction to the hegemony of conceptual and performance art in the colombian art academy and institutions. "Painting is more than an act of conceptual art. It is also an act of love, and therefore an act of madness, my choice of figuration is both a test of my passion for the medium and a bid to spread that passion".
